How Many Pokémon Cards Are There?

By TCG Emporium · Published 17 October 2026 · Checked 17 October 2026

Nobody publishes one official figure for every Pokémon card ever printed, so any single total rests on choices about what counts. Under the definition on this page, the 23 English expansions in the Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution series contain 4,551 cards, counted from the official Pokémon card database on pokemon.com on 17 October 2026. That is the part we can check today. We do not publish an all-time total, because the data needed to reconcile every era, language and promo release is not complete enough to stand behind.

Why different totals exist

A "card" can mean several different things. The narrowest is a distinct card identity: one card in one expansion with one collector number. A broader count adds each physical printing, such as a foil parallel that shares its number with the plain version. Broader still, language editions are separate releases with their own numbering, and promo cards arrive in tins, boxes and events rather than in a numbered expansion.

Even the official figures differ depending on where you look. The pokemon.com product page for 151 says it has over 160 cards. The official card database lists Rigid Band as 165/165 and Bulbasaur, an Illustration Rare, as 166/165, and it runs on to 207 entries, finishing with the basic Energy cards. All three numbers are correct. They answer different questions.

A total that does not state its rules cannot be checked or compared with another one. That is the main reason the figures you find for "how many Pokémon cards are there" disagree.

The count under this page definition

These are the rules every number on this page follows.

  • Counting definition: one entry per collector number per expansion, as listed in the official English Pokémon TCG card database on pokemon.com.
  • Language scope: English only.
  • Promo policy: Black Star promo groups are left out of the total and reported separately below.
  • Variant policy: foil parallels and other printings that share a collector number count once.
  • Coverage status: the 23 Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution series expansions released by the as-of date. Earlier series have not been audited yet.
  • Dataset version: v1.
  • As of: 17 October 2026.

Under those rules the count is 4,551. That is 3,414 cards across 16 Scarlet & Violet series expansions and 1,137 across seven Mega Evolution series expansions. For every expansion we checked that the number of database entries equals the highest collector number listed, so there are no gaps in the run. An announced expansion that had not been released on the as-of date is left out until it is.

If you are asking how many sets there are, the same database gives a partial answer. Its expansion filter lists 132 entries on 17 October 2026. Seven are promo groups, nine are galleries or subsets kept apart from their parent expansion (such as the Lost Origin Trainer Gallery and the Shining Fates Shiny Vault), and one is announced but not yet released. That leaves 115 released expansions. The list starts at Ruby & Sapphire, so Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and the other early English sets are not in the official database at all.

Break the count down by series and set type

The table uses the same rules as the total. The "product page says" column is how pokemon.com describes the size of each expansion on its own page. In every row it is a rounded-down floor, never the exact figure, which is why you cannot add those numbers up and get a real total.

Promo cards are a different type of release, and they sit outside the total. The Scarlet & Violet Promo Cards group in the official database lists 198 entries, but its numbers run to 225, so 27 numbers in the run have no entry. The Mega Evolution Promo Cards group lists 92 entries numbered up to 103, with 11 missing. The database alone does not show if those missing numbers were printed, so promos stay out of the total until they can be reconciled against another primary source.

Understand language and variant effects

The clearest language example is 151. The Japanese 151 expansion went on sale on 16 June 2023, and its official product page describes it as the Pokémon from Bulbasaur to Mew in Pokédex order. The official Japanese card search lists 210 cards for it. The English 151 followed on 22 September 2023 with 207 entries in the English database. Adding the two together and calling the result the size of 151 would count most of the set twice, which is the trap any multi-language total has to avoid. Our Japanese and English cards guide covers the other differences.

Variants work the same way inside one language. Prismatic Evolutions has 180 entries in the English database. Its official expansion page says it introduced premium parallel cards with Poké Ball and Master Ball treatments, and the press release for the set describes these as two sets of parallels, with the ball etched into the card background. Under this page's rules a parallel counts once, with its base card. Count every printing separately and the figure for that one expansion rises above 180, by an amount the public official data does not let us confirm. The Prismatic Evolutions set guide goes through the set itself.

Reproduce or download the count

Every row can be checked without trusting us. Open the official Pokémon TCG card database on pokemon.com, tick one expansion under Expansions in the advanced search, and run it. Results show 12 cards a page. Multiply the full pages by 12 and add the cards on the last page. For 151 that is 17 full pages plus 3 cards on the eighteenth, 207 in all. Then open the last card and check that its collector number matches, and that the next number along brings up a page-not-found message.

This is dataset version v1, read on 17 October 2026. The two tables above are the whole aggregate, and there is no separate download file yet. When we add a series or correct a row, we will change the version number and keep a note of what moved and why, so a figure quoted from an older version can still be traced.

Use the count to plan a collection

A card count is most useful for deciding what not to chase. 4,551 cards from three and a half years of releases is not a sensible target for most people, and nobody needs to own them all. A collection can start with one expansion, one favourite Pokémon or one era, and our guide to how to start collecting Pokémon cards walks through those choices.

The per-expansion figure tells you the size of the job. 151 at 207 entries fills exactly 23 nine-pocket binder pages. A master set is a bigger undertaking than the database count suggests, because it adds the parallels and other printings this page counts once. The master sets guide explains what that involves before you commit to one.

If you want to see where these expansions sit among everything released before them, the most useful next page is Pokémon card sets in order.
