Charizard ex 223/197

The card the set is remembered for. AKIRA EGAWA draws Charizard mid-roar, wings in blue, green and orange, against a background of shattered crystal. It is a Tera card, and the full-art treatment fills the whole frame.

Eight raw sales on 16 October ran from £60 to £82 once the highest and lowest were trimmed. That is a tight band for a card at the top of the set.

Graded copies are plentiful. Nearly 13,000 have a PSA 10, so a 10 is not scarce. PSA 10 sales have a median of about £544, more than seven times a raw copy.

Ninetales 199/197

The quiet number two. SIE NANAHARA shows a pale Ninetales among gnarled trees lit gold from behind, with the tails fanned out across the card. It sells for £21 to £26 raw.

Eight raw sales on 16 October sit in a narrow band, and a PSA 10 median of about £245 is roughly ten times a raw copy.

Cleffa 202/197

A small Pokémon with the set's calmest art. HYOGONOSUKE draws Cleffa standing on still, mirror-like water at dusk, with a shooting star crossing the sky above. Raw sales ran from £22 to £27.

Of the top four it has the smallest PSA 10 population, 3,072, and its PSA 10 median is about £300.

Charizard ex 228/197

The gold Charizard. The Hyper Rare is the gold version of the Charizard ex card, with pink and orange facets across the whole frame. It sells for £20 to £30 raw, well under half the special illustration rare.

Seven raw sales on 17 October put it fourth by median, just behind Cleffa. The art does the work on this set: collectors here pay more for the illustration than for the gold.

Scizor 205/197, the grading outlier

Raw, Scizor 205/197 sells for £10 to £11. A PSA 10 has a median of about £262, more than twenty times a raw copy. That is the biggest raw-to-PSA 10 gap of any card on this list.

That gap tells you where the value sits: a clean, well-centred Scizor is worth far more than an average one. It does not tell you that grading one will pay. Fees, postage both ways and the chance of a 9 rather than a 10 all come off the top. Our UK grading guide walks through those costs.

Further down the list

  • Charizard ex 215/197, the Ultra Rare full art, is the cheapest Charizard ex in the top ten at £14 to £19 raw. More than 6,000 have a PSA 10.
  • Gloom 198/197 by Masako Tomii sells for £12 to £15 raw, with a PSA 10 median of about £211.
  • Pidgeot ex 225/197 is the set's other special illustration rare in the top ten, at £11 to £14 raw.
  • Pidgeotto 208/197 and Houndour 204/197 just miss the table, with raw medians of about £9 and £8.

How we priced these cards

We read the most recent raw eBay completed sales for each card, up to ten, from CardTrack's sold-sales ledger, which covers the UK, US and other eBay sites. With six or more sales we drop the single highest and lowest, then quote the range of the rest. Dollars are converted at £0.7499 (16 October 2026).

PSA 10 figures are the median of PSA 10 completed sales, shown only where at least 500 copies hold that grade. The population figures are PSA's own counts as recorded in the ledger. The full method is in our guide on how to value Pokémon cards.

A note on pull rates

We do not publish pull rates for Obsidian Flames. There are no official odds, and community estimates vary with sample size and product. Our guide to pull rates explains why.

Collector notes

  • Three cards called Charizard ex. 223 is the special illustration rare, 228 the gold Hyper Rare and 215 the Ultra Rare. The number is the only quick way to tell which one a listing means.
  • Two illustrators with more than one card. 5ban Graphics drew both the gold and the Ultra Rare Charizard ex, and Jerky drew Pidgeot ex, Pidgey and Pidgeotto.
  • Graded supply is deep. With five-figure PSA 10 populations on the two top Charizard ex cards, there is no shortage of slabs. Compare several graded sales before you pay above the median.
  • Check the reverse holo isn't being sold as something more. Many cards have reverse holo versions that share the standard card's number. Our guide to holo and reverse holo cards shows the difference, and Pokémon rarity symbols explains the symbols on each card.

Questions collectors ask

How many cards are in Obsidian Flames?

230 in total.

Is a PSA 10 Obsidian Flames Charizard ex rare?

Not especially. PSA has graded 12,970 copies of the special illustration rare at 10. That is why a PSA 10 sells for about seven times a raw copy rather than many times more.
