Choosing Pokémon advent calendars

The Pokémon Company releases an official Trading Card Game advent calendar each autumn, sold as the Holiday Calendar. It is a box of numbered doors with booster packs, promo cards and small accessories behind them, built so that each door opens onto something from the card game rather than a plastic figure. There are also Pokémon advent calendars from toy licensees that hold figures and no cards. This page is about the card one.

What is inside

The contents change each year and are printed on the box. Recent editions have held a mix of booster packs from that year's sets, several foil promo cards made for the calendar, sticker sheets, and card accessories such as mini tins or sleeves, spread across the doors so that the packs and promos are not all at the front. We will quote the exact door-by-door list for the edition we stock from the box itself, and we will not describe one year's calendar using another year's contents.

Which one to buy

If you want cards, buy the official TCG Holiday Calendar. The figure calendars are fine products but there is no card in them, and the two are easily confused on a shelf because both carry the Pokémon logo. The TCG calendar says "Trading Card Game" on the front and lists booster packs on the back.

When we will list it

The calendar is a seasonal product that sells through by early December. We will list the current year's edition as soon as we have a confirmed allocation, with a date on the page, and we will not list it before that, because a listing for a calendar we might not get is no use to anyone. Previous years' calendars sometimes resurface sealed; we will list those as the year they are, with that year's contents.

Who it suits

A child or a new collector, because it spreads the opening over a month and comes with somewhere to keep the cards. Anyone buying a Christmas present who wants to avoid guessing at a set. A set collector will find the promo cards are the draw and the packs a bonus.

If the calendar is not what you need, the tins and Elite Trainer Box pages cover the other gift-shaped products.

Questions we get asked

Does the Pokémon advent calendar have real cards in it?

The official TCG Holiday Calendar does: booster packs and promo cards behind the doors. The figure calendars from toy companies do not.

When does it come out?

Autumn, usually October, with most stock gone by early December. We will put a date on the page when we have the current edition confirmed.

Are the promo cards in the calendar exclusive?

They are printed for the calendar, and most are not available anywhere else that year. The box lists them.

Will you have last year's calendar?

Only if we can source it sealed from a distributor or retailer, in which case it will be listed as that year's edition with that year's contents.
